NCBI returns to Chicago February 7th & 8th, 2008

The Chicago Technology Park – BiTmaP Program in conjunction with DePaul University/ School of Computer Science -Telecommunications and Information Systems, Northwestern University/ Biomedical Informatics Center (NUBIC) - Center for Genetic Medicine (CGM) - Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center (RHLCC) - Galter Health Sciences Library and The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) will host the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) for training sessions on Thursday, February 7th and Friday February 8th, 2008.

The NCBI training sessions are focused mini-courses in bioinformatics for researchers, teachers, and college students. Each mini-course is 2.5 hours in length with the first 1.5 hour devoted to an overview that is followed by a 1.0 hour hands-on session. These mini-courses are being offered free of charge and everyone is welcome to participate.

BY CAR

From the north and northwest
From the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/I-94) exit at Jackson Boulevard and turn east.
The Loop campus is approximately one mile from the expressway on Jackson Boulevard
at State Street.

From the west
From the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290), continue toward downtown. As you approach
the downtown area, the expressway becomes Congress Parkway. Turn left (north) on
Dearborn Street, go two blocks to Jackson Boulevard and turn right (east). The Loop
campus is one block east on Jackson Boulevard at State Street.

From the south
From the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/I-94) exit at Jackson Boulevard and turn east.
The Loop campus is approximately one mile from the expressway on Jackson Boulevard
at State Street.

From Lake Shore Drive (north or south)
Exit Lake Shore Drive at Jackson Boulevard and turn west. Proceed to Michigan Avenue
(100 east). Turn right on Michigan Avenue, go one block to Adams Street (200 south)
and turn left. Go one block to Wabash Avenue (50 east) and turn left. Go one block to
Jackson Boulevard.


BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Rapid Transit Lines
All six rapid transit train lines service the downtown Chicago area and DePaul's Loop
campus. From the subway trains, exit at Jackson Boulevard. From the elevated trains, exit
at Adams Street/Wabash Avenue. These are the train lines servicing the Loop campus:

  • Howard/Dan Ryan (Red)
  • Evanston Express (Purple)
  • Ravenswood (Brown)
  • O'Hare/Congress/Douglas (Blue)
  • Lake/Jackson Park/Englewood (Green)
  • Midway/Loop (Orange)

Buses
Bus routes interconnect throughout the city. These buses stop very near the Loop campus.

Metra Train Stations
All Metra Train stations are located within a short walking distance (or cab ride) of the Loop campus:

  • Union Station, Canal Street and Adams Street: Walk east on Adams Street until State Street. Turn right (south) for one block to Jackson Boulevard.
  • Chicago & Northwestern Station, Canal Street and Madison Avenue: Walk east on Adams Street until State Street. Turn right (south) for three blocks to Jackson Boulevard.
  • LaSalle Street Station, LaSalle Street and Congress Parkway: Walk east down Congress Parkway until you reach State Street. Turn left (north) for two blocks to Jackson Boulevard.
  • Illinois Central Station (includes service for South Shore Line), Michigan Avenue and Van Buren Street: Walk north on Michigan Avenue for one block to Jackson Boulevard.

*The CTA Blue Line goes directly from the UIC Engineering School to the DePaul Loop Campus.

BY CAR

From the north and northwest
From the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/I-94) traveling east (Note: Highway is called I-90/94 East but runs north-south in Chicago metro area). Exit at Ohio Street. Ohio Street is a one way exit eastbound. Follow Ohio Street east for 12 traffic lights to Fairbanks Court. Turn left (north) on to Fairbanks Court. When you reach Erie Street, you have entered Northwestern University's Chicago Campus. Chicago Avenue is 5 blocks north.

From the west
Option 1
Take Interstate 88 east to Interstate 290 East (Eisenhower Expressway). Follow the signs for Congress Parkway/Expressway. Follow this road until it ends at Columbus Drive. Turn left (north) on Columbus Drive, which turns into Fairbanks Court, and go north about a mile. You are now entering Northwestern University's Chicago Campus. Option 2
Take Interstate 80 east to I-55 North or I-57 North to I-90/94 West. Exit Congress Parkway/Expressway. Follow this road east until it ends at Columbus Drive. Turn left (north) on Columbus Drive, which turns into Fairbanks Court, and go north about a mile. You are now entering Northwestern University's Chicago Campus.

From the south

From Lake Shore Drive (north or south)
Turn west off Lake Shore Drive onto Chicago Avenue (there is a traffic light at Chicago and Lake Shore Drive). You are now entering the Chicago Campus. Fairbanks Court is the first traffic light you encounter as you travel west.

Parking
Street parking is sparse and by 2 hour meter only. There is a parking garage at the corner of Erie and Fairbanks (enter on Erie) and another between Superior and Huron (enter on Superior). The Erie garage offers discounted parking if you enter before 9:30 a.m. There is also a small parking garage at the Museum of Contemporary Art (entrance from Chicago Avenue).


BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Rapid Transit Lines
Northwestern University’s Chicago Campus can be accessed via the CTA train lines with minimal transfers, followed by a short walk, cab ride or bus ride to campus:

  • Howard/Dan Ryan (Red) -
    Exit at Chicago and State and walk east to Fairbanks Court (approx. 0.4 miles).

  • Evanston Express (Purple) -
    Transfer to Red Line at Belmont or Fullerton. Follow instructions for Red Line above.

  • Ravenswood (Brown) -
    Transfer to Red Line at Fullerton or Belmont. Follow instructions for Red Line above. OR exit at Chicago Avenue and walk east approximately 1.1 miles to Fairbanks Court or take the Chicago Avenue bus #66 east to Fairbanks.

  • O'Hare/Congress/Douglas (Blue) -
    Transfer to Red Line at Washington or Jackson. Travel north, exit at Chicago and State station. Follow instructions for Red Line above.

  • Lake/Jackson Park/Englewood (Green) -
    Transfer to Red Line at Roosevelt/Wabash. Take Red Line north to Chicago and State. Follow instructions for Red Line above.

  • Midway/Loop (Orange) -
    Transfer to Red Line at Roosevelt/Wabash. Take Red Line north to Chicago and State. Follow instructions for Red Line above.

Buses

Galter Library Location
Enter the Galter Health Sciences Library from 303 E. Chicago Avenue (Ward Building entrance). After entering the building, turn left at the bank of elevators in the lobby. To get to the LRC Teaching Space, proceed down the hallway from the library entrance and turn right just before the Reference Room. Walk down the short stairway, cross the library atrium, and pass through the glass doors to the LRC. The Teaching Space is on the south side of the LRC (towards the back of the room).
