Leo is the fifth
constellation of the Western Zodiac. It’s symbol is the Lion and it’s
glyph represents the Lion’s tail. Leo is ruled by the Sun - insignificant
in cosmic terms, a minor star in the galactic equivalent of Swindon -
but in our Solar System the focal point around which everything revolves.
Here we find the essence of the Leonine nature. Leo must be at the centre of something! However, the flamboyant show-off depicted in much astrological literature is often somewhat wide of the mark. These are proud and self-respecting people with a strong sense of personal dignity - although admittedly with a great talent for the dramatic too. They are fiery, positive and enthusiastic in their approach to life - seeking recognition, authority, appreciation and approbation - if not exactly worship! Many find fame and fortune as public figures, but many others assume this pivotal position within the home and family, at work, play or in the local community. Leos will expand their sphere of influence to the limits of their capabilities, but the level enjoyed remains the crucial thing. It is better to be a big fish in a small pond than mere plankton in the ocean. This sign appears very confident and capable, but their legendary ego is actually quite fragile and easily dented. They are not afraid of risk, because their positive attitude helps to ensure that these reach successful culmination. Privately though, defeats and humiliation are very keenly felt. Leo withdraws to lick his/her wounds and publicly is soon back roaring again. Once their sphere of influence is established Leos shine unhindered, displaying those typical attributes of generosity, magnanimity, big-heartedness and a noble inclination. There is often a major focus on children, pets and home life (the Lion’s den!) as they manifest their personal creativity in the broadest possible sense. They can make huge sacrifices for their families, although the beneficiaries had better express suitable levels of gratitude! Leos are capable of great loyalty and will unstintingly defend their loved ones. As befits the ‘King of the Beasts’, they do not adapt well to menial positions. Leos must always be big, grand and noticeable so the humdrum may hold some difficulties. The need for acknowledgement, approval and something of which to be proud is very real. Positively the world of work can confer status as well as providing the necessary financial means. Given responsibility and authority they are committed, diligent, dependable, hard workers, good organisers and true professionals. When deprived of this - or unwilling to commit towards it - they can grow lazy, indolent and apathetic. There will always be a substantial focus on fun, enjoyment and lying in the Sun! In relationships Leos are warm, giving, romantic, sincere and affectionate - willing to make you the centre of their Universe. However, their constant need for romance, attention and appreciation can make them quite demanding. Although loyalty is a definite feature they will seek pastures new if things become too routine. They are surprisingly idealistic, trusting, open and markedly susceptible to flattery so can easily end up disillusioned. Serial monogamy may also be a feature, seeing their partner as perfect initially and subsequently seeing only defects when they later turn out to be human after all! Leo subjects should guard against arrogance, big-headedness, excessive vanity and egotism, a domineering attitude, obstinacy, conceit, extravagance, snobbishness and pomposity. They are often considered to be the ‘showpeople’ of the Zodiac - dramatic, flamboyant and outgoing. Indeed this describes some Leos very well, but there are many others who pursue life in a much quieter way, whilst still maintaining the classic Leonine expression. © Paul Wade 1999 |
